Shocking I-87 Incident: Trooper and Tow Truck Driver Injured by Alleged Impaired Driver
A man from Malta faces several serious charges, including driving while ability impaired by drugs and aggravated vehicular assault, after a collision on I-87 in the Town of Colonie that injured a state trooper and a tow truck driver. The incident took place on Saturday, November 2, and led to the hospitalization of the trooper, who remains in stable condition.
The New York State Police reported that the trooper, whose injuries are severe, sustained multiple fractures and is now recovering at Albany Medical Center. According to updates from the police, the trooper will need surgery due to the injuries suffered during the incident.
The tow truck driver, who also sustained significant injuries, was treated and released on Sunday. Initial reports had underestimated the extent of his injuries, but the police confirmed he was hurt more seriously than previously stated.
The tow truck driver, identified as an employee of Lussier’s Autobody Towing and Recovery, was on duty at the time of the accident. The company acknowledged the incident in a Facebook post on Saturday, stating that one of its operators was struck while assisting the New York State Police with towing a vehicle.
“Today, we were called by the New York State Police to tow a vehicle off of I-87 southbound in the Town of Colonie,” the company shared. “Without releasing too many details, one of our operators was struck by a passing vehicle. Please keep him in your thoughts as he recovers.”
The suspect, who police have identified, has a prior conviction for driving while intoxicated within the past decade. Following his arrest, he was arraigned in Colonie Town Court on Sunday and is currently being held without bail in Albany County Jail.
The State Police emphasized the importance of safe driving, particularly when emergency responders and roadside assistance workers are present, reminding the public of the dangers posed by impaired driving.
