Shocking Update: Over 6,000 People Displaced in Haiti After Brutal Gang Attack Kills Dozens!
Nearly 6,300 people in Haiti have been forced to leave their homes after a brutal attack by heavily armed gang members in the country’s Artibonite region.
This assault, which took place in the early hours of Thursday in the town of Pont-Sondé, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 70 individuals, according to the United Nations’ migration agency.
The aftermath of this violent event has left the majority of those displaced—almost 90%—seeking shelter with relatives in host families.
Others have taken refuge in alternative locations, including schools, as reported by the International Organization for Migration.
One of the affected residents, 60-year-old Sonise Mirano, described the chaos of the attack. “They came in shooting and breaking into the houses to steal and burn.
I just had time to grab my children and run in the dark,” said Mirano, who is now staying with hundreds of others in a park in the nearby city of Saint-Marc.
Following the attack, the streets of Pont-Sondé were littered with the bodies of those who lost their lives, many of whom were fatally shot in the head.
Activists and local officials have been uncovering more victims as they gain access to different areas of the town. The casualties included a young mother, her newborn baby, and a midwife, painting a grim picture of the impact on families and communities.
Prime Minister Garry Conille, in his remarks from Saint-Marc, promised justice for those responsible. He emphasized the need for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and to ensure that the victims receive proper restitution.
“It is necessary to arrest them, bring them to justice, and put them in prison. They need to pay for what they have done,” Conille said.
The incident has shocked both national and international communities. The U.N. Human Rights Office expressed its horror over the attack, highlighting the ongoing issue of gang violence in Haiti.
The European Union also condemned the violence, calling it a severe escalation in the brutality that criminal groups are inflicting upon the Haitian population.
In response to the violence, Haiti’s government has taken action by deploying an elite police unit from the capital, Port-au-Prince, to secure Pont-Sondé.
Additionally, medical supplies have been sent to support the overwhelmed local hospital. Prime Minister Conille assured the public that police forces would remain in the area for as long as it takes to restore security.
The increase in gang violence across the Artibonite region, which is a key agricultural hub for Haiti, has become a significant concern.
This recent attack is one of the largest massacres in the area, highlighting a troubling trend that mirrors the situation in the capital city, Port-au-Prince, where about 80% of the territory is reportedly under gang control.
These violent incidents often stem from turf wars, with gangs targeting civilians in areas dominated by rival groups.
