A bright future turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for a Hudson Valley student moments after achieving a major milestone. Linh Hong Nguyen, a 25-year-old graduate from Red Hook, New York, lost her life on Saturday, May 25, after being struck by a car while walking home from her college graduation.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Broadway (Route 9) near Cherry Street in the Village of Red Hook. A 2017 Ford Fusion, traveling southbound, veered off the road and struck Nguyen, who was walking on the sidewalk. Nguyen had just received her master’s degree from Bard College earlier that day. A few days before her untimely death, she performed her Degree Recital, showcasing her remarkable talent as a musician. Originally from Vietnam, Nguyen had come to the Hudson Valley to pursue graduate studies.

Her passing has left the Bard College community and her loved ones in deep mourning. Terrence Wilson, Nguyen’s piano teacher at Bard, expressed his heartbreak on Facebook:
“My pain and anguish over losing Linh to this horrific event is excruciating. I can only imagine what her family in Vietnam is going through. You are a beautiful soul, which always manifested in your playing.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help Nguyen’s family during this difficult time.

Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi confirmed that the driver’s actions leading to this tragedy were not merely accidental. In a press release, Parisi stated:
“This tragic accident has resulted in the loss of life, and no words can fully express the sorrow felt by the family and the community.
