Tragic Yorktown Incident: Woman Killed and Suspect Takes Own Life in Standoff with Police!
A man suspected of fatally shooting a woman in Yorktown on Saturday night later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as police were closing in on him. The suspect, 51-year-old Salvatore Ciniglio, reportedly shot himself before police could confront him following a brief manhunt.
The incident began when Yorktown police responded to a domestic violence report at the Coach ‘N Four apartment complex on East Main Street in Yorktown’s Jefferson Valley.
There, they found 63-year-old Geraldine Krecmer lying on the walkway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities believe that Ciniglio confronted Krecmer when she returned home that evening.
According to officials, Ciniglio had a difficult relationship with Krecmer’s daughter, with whom he had a child. Police later identified Ciniglio as the prime suspect in the shooting and issued a shelter-in-place warning for residents of the town.
Within hours, officers from the NYPD in the Bronx spotted a car that Ciniglio was believed to be driving. They attempted to pursue him, but before they could make contact, Ciniglio shot himself, authorities said.
Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman expressed his condolences and said the town would support Krecmer’s family in any way possible. He also praised the efforts of the local police department and thanked state, county, and other law enforcement agencies who assisted in the investigation.
While authorities were unsure where Ciniglio had been living recently, land records in Westchester County indicated that he had purchased a multi-family home on Saw Mill River Road in Ardsley two years ago. These records also listed a Middle Village, Queens address for Ciniglio.
