A 10-year-old boy in Orange County loses three fingers when a firework explodes in his hand. His brother is also hurt

Two young boys were hurt badly when an illegal fireworks was found on the street in Orange County. One of them lost three fingers. As the boys get better, the government is now sending out a strong warning.

A walk home ends in tragedy

Ernesto Ocampo, 10, and his brother Dominic Ocampo, 11, were going home from soccer practice on Friday when they came across a firework that hadn’t been set off.

They picked it up and took it home because they were interested.

They set off the fireworks while Edther was still holding on to it. He lost three fingers when it went off in his hand. His family says that he also had serious burns, internal bleeding in his abdomen, and deep cuts on his face.

Currently, the young soccer player is in intensive care.

Edther’s mother, Cynthia Garcia-Huertas, stated, “As a mom, I don’t want to see him in any pain, and I don’t want to add to his pain, so him seeing me like this… it would be more harder for him.” “I’m making a great effort to pray with him. I truly can’t stand to see him.”

Dominic, meantime, is recuperating at home after suffering serious injuries as well.

The risks associated with using illegal fireworks

The youngsters discovered an abandoned aerial shell, a hazardous explosive frequently found in skyrockets that shoot upwards, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The specific location of the shell is unknown, however it appears to have been found close to train tracks. According to authorities, people will take off the aerial shell from the skyrocket’s tip and hold the exposed fuse in their hand while lighting it.

The exposed fuse, sometimes referred to as a “quick match,” is made of flash powder and burns its fuse length almost instantly. After then, the fuse ignites the shell’s 50 grams of flash powder, which causes a powerful explosion.

The sheriff’s office released a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to both boys and their families as they navigate what we can only imagine are very difficult recoveries.” “We also want to raise awareness in our community about the risks associated with these illegal fireworks. They are capable of causing severe injury.

We kindly request that anyone in the community who comes across anything that seems like an illicit firework or potential explosive notify us right away so that our [Hazardous Devices Section] can handle and dispose of the explosive in a safe manner.”

Garcia-Huertas is hopeful Edther perseveres through this trying moment in the interim.

Although Edther still needs to have more procedures, he should recover well.
