Albany Opens 51 Brand-New Apartments in The Park South Area!
The city of Albany celebrated the completion of 51 new affordable housing units in the Park South neighborhood. The $22 million development, named Station 25, includes a five-story residential building alongside the historic fire signal equipment building.
The city of Albany officially completed a key affordable housing project in the Park South neighborhood, part of an ongoing effort to revitalize the area. The newly constructed five-story building is part of the Station 25 development, a two-building project valued at $22 million.
Station 25 includes 51 affordable housing units, which address residents’ housing needs while fostering the economic development of the surrounding community.
Mayor Kathy Sheehan, along with other local leaders, celebrated the project’s completion in a formal event. Mayor Sheehan praised the development’s location, which offers proximity to key amenities such as grocery stores, elementary and middle schools, and various businesses on Albany’s vibrant Lark Street. “This really demonstrates that you can build an affordable component in a neighborhood as that neighborhood grows and changes,” said Sheehan.
The development includes new construction and the revitalization of the historic former fire signal equipment building, adding a blend of modern living spaces with a touch of local history. Station 25’s development is seen as an integral part of the Park South Urban Renewal Plan, a broader initiative aimed at improving housing, commercial spaces, and public infrastructure in the area.
The project was supported by New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), a government agency focused on creating affordable housing across New York. According to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, nearly 1,500 homes have been created or preserved in Albany County over the past five years as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to tackle housing affordability and availability.
The Park South neighborhood has undergone significant transformation in recent years, with the development of new housing, businesses, and public spaces. However, concerns remain about the affordability of housing for longtime residents.
While the addition of affordable units at Station 25 is seen as a positive step, some community members have voiced concerns about the broader implications of gentrification. Rising property values and rent increases have made it more difficult for lower-income families to remain in the neighborhood.
