Black Friday Surprise: Some Social Security Recipients Get an Extra Check!
Some Social Security recipients received an extra check on Black Friday thanks to an early disbursement of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. Typically, SSI checks are issued on the first of each month. However, because December 1 falls on a weekend this year, the payments were sent out earlier, on November 29.
SSI is available to individuals who are elderly (65 and above), blind, or disabled and have limited income or resources. This program also extends to children with similar conditions.
The amount a person receives through SSI depends on various factors, including whether they’re working or receiving disability benefits, unemployment payments, or pensions. According to the Social Security Administration, the maximum payment for individuals is $943, while couples can receive up to $1,415.
The next round of SSI payments will be sent out on December 31 since January 1 is a holiday. Additionally, Social Security payments are expected to rise by 2.5% starting in January, meaning many recipients will see an extra $50 in their monthly checks.
