The Local Community Chose to Transfer the Church to a Higher Height in the 1880s
They removed it piece by piece and relocated it to its current place on the slopes of Mauna Loa. This attempt was intended to take advantage of the cooler environment and fertile soil. It was eventually renamed St. Benedict Catholic Church.

In 1902, Father John Berchmans Velghe, a Belgian priest of the Sacred Hearts order, arrived and began remodeling the church’s interior.
