Health Department Confirmed: West Nile Virus Detected in Another Area of New York State!
Mosquitoes carrying a dangerous disease continue to show up in New York’s Hudson Valley. The Orange County Health Department confirmed that mosquitoes with West Nile Virus have been detected in the county for the first time this year.
This alarming news comes as health officials remind residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, especially since the virus has been found in other parts of the state as well.
The West Nile Virus is considered a serious threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refers to mosquitoes as the “world’s deadliest animal” because they spread numerous diseases, including West Nile Virus, malaria, dengue fever, and more.
According to the CDC, mosquitoes cause more deaths worldwide than any other animal. In 2017 alone, nearly half a million people died from malaria, which mosquitoes can spread.
Recent data shows that cases of severe West Nile Virus infections increased by 25% in 2018 compared to the previous decade. New York State has been particularly hard-hit, leading the nation in West Nile Virus cases in 2022.
This summer, the Orange County Department of Health has been closely monitoring the mosquito population. Officials reported that they have found several positive mosquito samples for West Nile Virus. Orange County Health Commissioner Alicia Pointer emphasized the importance of protecting oneself from mosquito bites.
She urged residents to wear appropriate clothing and consider using insect repellent when spending time outdoors. It’s also crucial to check for standing water around homes, as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.
While officials have not disclosed the exact locations within Orange County where the infected mosquitoes were found, they indicated that positive samples are common each summer.
In addition to Orange County, Westchester County also reported finding West Nile Virus-carrying mosquitoes for the first time this year. The Rockland County Department of Health confirmed that the virus has been detected multiple times in their area as well. They warned that a bite from an infected mosquito can lead to severe illness and, in some cases, even death.
West Nile Virus can lead to serious health issues, including neurological diseases. Symptoms may range from mild to severe and can include flu-like signs such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and sometimes a rash or swollen lymph nodes. If anyone suspects they have symptoms related to West Nile Virus, they should see a doctor immediately.
