I-635 Incident: Affidavit Details STABBING, HIJACKING, and Multiple VEHICLE CRASHES

Multiple vehicles crashed. Good Samaritans were run over by their cars. A bystander, who attempted to combat the suspect with a pipe, was stabbed in the stomach, according to authorities.

This was the chaotic scenario, as reported by police in an arrest warrant affidavit, that occurred during Tuesday morning rush hour on I-635 in Northeast Dallas.

Three people were hospitalized, including one in severe condition, and all westbound lanes of the highway near Forest Lane were closed for more than four hours, according to officials.

According to police, one person was responsible for the incident. Angel Zamora Moreno, 26, was detained after a group of bystanders held him down while police arrived, according to police documents.

Moreno faces seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of illegal use of a motor vehicle, and one act of criminal mischief, according to police.

According to police documentation, the incident featured several victims and witnesses who had stopped to help, were delayed in traffic, or were engaged in the initial crash. According to authorities, one of those witnesses, along with a group of bystanders, was eventually able to take down Moreno and end the incident.

An arrest warrant document obtained by WFAA detailed how the chaotic scene developed.

According to witnesses, Moreno was driving a gold Toyota Camry west on I-635 around 7 a.m. when he sideswiped several vehicles before colliding with an 18-wheeler.

A Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) employee witnessed the incident and stopped to assist, while one of the drivers exited to inspect the damage, according to authorities.

According to the affidavit, a witness stated that Moreno exited his vehicle, walked to his trunk, and took an eight-inch fixed-blade knife. He then raced toward one of the drivers, a woman, but she was able to return to her vehicle and lock the doors.

According to the complaint, Moreno approached another vehicle stopped on the highway and began jumping on its hood and windshield, causing damage to the glass. Moreno slid off the car as the driver drove away.

According to the affidavit, another individual exited his vehicle with a metal pipe and approached Moreno. According to the complaint, Moreno stabbed the victim in the stomach, torso, and ear before being hit in the head with the pipe.

A pickup truck driver witnessed the fight and picked up the stabbing victim, transporting him to the hospital. While this was going on, Moreno took control of the TxDOT employee’s truck and pushed it into the rear of the pickup truck transporting the stab victim to the hospital, according to the affidavit.

The pickup truck driver managed to escape and transport the stabbed victim to Medical City Hospital.

However, the event was not over, according to the affidavit.

Moreno, still driving the TxDOT truck, swung back on the highway and struck the TxDOT worker in the leg before ramming another car involved in the initial incident, according to the affidavit.

A medical worker saw what was going on and got out of her car to aid. When she did, Moreno got into her car and began chasing her along the freeway, according to the complaint. Moreno eventually ran over the victim and dragged her across two lanes of traffic, according to the complaint.

According to the affidavit, a witness raced over to Moreno, who was still in the victim’s car and reached out to touch the ignition button, causing the automobile to come to a halt. According to the affidavit, Moreno exited the automobile and ran about 100 feet before being apprehended by bystanders who held him down before police arrived.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews transported three individuals to the hospital. The suspect stabbed the driver, who was in critical condition, according to authorities. The other two victims were described as stable, but further information regarding their statuses was unavailable.

According to footage from the scene, several automobiles seemed to be damaged in the incident, producing major traffic jams on 635.

According to WFAA, Police identified Moreno based on his California identification card, which was on him at the time of arrest. According to the affidavit, police discovered Moreno’s address in Plano, but Moreno’s uncle told investigators he hadn’t resided there in nearly a month.
