Movember Party Alert: Support Albany Firefighters’ Fight Against Cancer!
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Movember is ending, and for some Albany firefighters, that means saying goodbye to their mustaches. On Friday, they’ll host a party to celebrate the cause and raise money for something deeply personal to them—supporting cancer and mental health awareness.
Ben Kurdt, an Albany firefighter, shared why this cause is so important. “I’ve lost a friend to suicide, and I have friends dealing with on-the-job cancers,” he said. These struggles hit close to home for many in the firefighting community.
Kevin Murphy, a former Albany firefighter with over 20 years of service, knows firsthand the challenges cancer can bring. Diagnosed in 2019 with occupational throat cancer, Murphy underwent intense treatment after doctors discovered three tumors. “Most guys are not able to go back to work due to the side effects,” he explained. “The long- and short-term effects of cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy can be overwhelming.”
Throughout November, Albany firefighters participated in their version of “No Shave November.” Instead of growing full beards—which can interfere with the proper seal on their protective masks—they grew mustaches to show support for colleagues like Murphy, who are fighting cancer and other health issues.
For some, like Cory Vanleuven, co-director of the Albany Firefighter Cancers and Disability Foundation, the commitment extends beyond a single month. “I actually grew it three years ago, and I’ve kept it since,” Vanleuven said. “I support the cause all year round.”
The public is invited to join the firefighters in supporting their mission. The annual Movember party will take place on Friday, Nov. 29, at McGeary’s in Albany from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will feature raffles, drinks, and a mustache competition judged by NEWS10’s Giuliana Bruno. It’s an evening designed to bring the community together for a good cause.
Funds raised during the party will benefit the Albany Firefighter Cancers and Disability Foundation. This non-profit organization provides financial assistance for medical expenses and support for firefighters facing serious health issues. By easing the financial burden, the foundation helps these heroes focus on their recovery.
Movember is more than just a month for growing moustaches—it’s a chance to highlight critical issues affecting firefighters and support those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
