NYCHA Offers Unique Support for Residents to Build Their Own Childcare Businesses!
UPPER MANHATTAN (PIX11) — A special graduation ceremony was held recently for 16 NYCHA residents who are now on their way to starting their home-based childcare businesses.
These residents are part of the NYCHA’s Childcare Business Pathways program, which helps individuals start and grow profitable businesses while working from home.
Alexandra Johnson, a mother of two living at the Marlboro Houses in Upper Manhattan, is one of the program’s newest graduates.
She says that her life changed when she checked her email last year and discovered an opportunity to enroll in this free, 15-week program.
The program, which is designed for NYCHA residents and Section 8 voucher holders, provides essential training to launch childcare businesses.
It also offers guidance on growing those businesses into successful ventures. JPMorgan Chase provides support to the program, which has been running for eight years.
Michelle Raymie, who runs the program and serves as the director of NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability, says the program has been a huge success.
Over the years, 137 NYCHA residents have graduated and many of them have gone on to open childcare businesses in their neighborhoods.
For Johnson, the program was a chance to follow her passion. She is now graduating with a New York State license that allows her to operate a childcare business from her home. She is proud of her accomplishments and is eager to help other mothers achieve the same success.
This program has proven to be a life-changer for many NYCHA residents, offering them the chance to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
With the support of the Childcare Business Pathways program, residents like Johnson are finding new opportunities and creating a positive impact in their communities.
