Orange County Motorcyclist Killed in Early Morning Crash with Deer on Route 302!
A tragic motorcycle accident has taken the life of a 28-year-old man from Pine Bush, New York. The accident occurred early in the morning on Saturday, October 5th, when a deer unexpectedly crossed the road.
According to Chief of Police Dominick L. Blasko, the Town of Crawford Police Department received a call at approximately 6:50 a.m. to respond to the accident on State Route 302.
As officers arrived at the scene, which was just south of the intersection with State Route 17K, they discovered that a motorcycle had collided with a deer that had been crossing the road.
After investigating with the help of the New York State Police, it was determined that the deer had crossed the path of a motorcycle operated by Stephen Montgomery, a 28-year-old resident of Pine Bush, Orange County, New York.
Montgomery was riding his 2016 Harley Davidson southbound on State Route 302 just before 7 a.m. when the deer crossed his path, leading to a devastating collision.
The impact threw Montgomery off his motorcycle. His bike continued to slide down the road, hitting a PVC pipe before finally coming to a stop.
Emergency responders from the Bullville Fire Department and Pine Bush Ambulance Service arrived quickly at the scene and transported Montgomery to Garnet Medical Center.
Sadly, despite their efforts, Montgomery succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
This tragic accident highlights the dangers that drivers face when wildlife unexpectedly enters the roadway, especially in areas like the Hudson Valley, where deer are common.
Deer-related vehicle accidents occur frequently in New York, particularly during the fall months.
The New York State Department of Transportation reports that around 65,000 deer-vehicle collisions happen annually across the state, with most incidents occurring between October and December.
Drivers in New York are reminded to stay vigilant, especially during peak deer activity times, which are typically around dusk or dawn.
