Shocking Truth: New York Mom Lost $12 Million Lotto Jackpot Without Knowing for 31 Years

Shocking Truth: New York Mom Lost $12 Million Lotto Jackpot Without Knowing for 31 Years!

After three long decades, a New York woman named Janet Valenti has come forward, revealing that she missed out on a massive $12 million lottery prize from a 1991 Lotto jackpot.

The news has come as a shock to many, as most people dream of winning such a large sum to improve their lives.

At 77 years old, Valenti recently disclosed to local lottery officials that she was the rightful owner of the unclaimed jackpot that remained untouched for over 30 years.

Back in 1991, Valenti’s life could have changed forever if only she had realized that she was holding the winning lottery ticket. She says that she placed the ticket on an end table next to her couch alongside a few other tickets.

Assuming that she had checked all of them, she mistakenly threw them away just before heading out with her kids for a weekend at a friend’s house.

While she was enjoying her weekend, she was completely unaware that she had accidentally tossed away a $12 million jackpot ticket.

When she returned, a friend mentioned that a winning $12 million Lotto ticket had been sold in Staten Island. Only then did Valenti realize that the winning numbers were hers, but by the time she rushed home to retrieve the ticket, it was too late.

In a twist of fate, her next-door neighbor, who had never taken out the trash before, decided to do so that very weekend. Because of this, Valenti’s trash was collected and disposed of before she could search for the ticket.

“My next-door neighbor, who has never in her life, the whole time I lived there, ever put my garbage out for collection, she did,” Valenti told the Staten Island Advance.

The story of the Lotto ticket ended disappointingly on July 17, 1992, exactly one year after it was lost.

The unclaimed jackpot was returned to the state lottery fund, marking the largest unclaimed prize in New York’s history at the time.

For years, Carolina Cutroneo, the owner of the store where the ticket was sold, tried to find the winner. She put up signs and asked people if they had purchased the winning ticket, but no one came forward.

“I think somebody, when they saw they’d won, died or never found out in the first place,” Cutroneo said at the time. “Initially, we were putting up signs every day, but no one came forward. It’s probably somebody who needs it.”

Back then, many believed that the winner might have been someone from outside the area, but now it’s clear that it wasn’t true. Valenti was the local who had unknowingly tossed away her chance at a life-changing fortune.

Reflecting on what might have been, Valenti shared a surprisingly optimistic perspective. “Given that kind of money, things can go bad,” she said. “That was a saving grace.

Who knows what would have happened if I’d had that money? You read these stories; a lot of people win Lotto, and they drop dead.

Maybe Bruno was looking out for us not to have that kind of money.” Despite losing such a huge prize, Valenti remains hopeful that she might win the lottery again one day.
