Union College President David Harris announced on Monday that he would be stepping down at the end of the academic year in June 2025. Harris, who has been leading the college since July 2018, shared the news with the campus community in a video message, explaining that he does not have specific plans for his future but does not intend to seek another college or university presidency.

Harris emphasized that his goal has always been to ensure that Union College thrives in the present and the future. He explained that part of this goal involves knowing when it is the right time to hand over leadership.

Harris’s final day as president will be June 30, 2025, giving the college ample time to conduct a thorough search for his successor.

“My goal has always been to ensure that Union thrives now and across multiple tomorrows,” Harris said in his message. “Part of that requires understanding when it is the right time to pass the baton.” Harris’s leadership has been characterized by his commitment to students and his passion for Union College’s unique mission.

Harris’s announcement gives Union College nearly two years to identify and appoint a new leader who can continue the progress and initiatives he has set in motion. The early notice is intended to ensure a smooth transition and allow the board ample time to find the right candidate to lead Union into the future.

During his time as president, Harris has been noted for his focus on enhancing the student experience, supporting academic programs, and promoting Union’s distinct character within the higher education landscape.

His tenure has been marked by efforts to build a more inclusive and engaged campus community, strengthen the college’s financial health, and improve its infrastructure.
