New Social Security Checks Start in January 2025 – Dates Revealed!
Over 70 million people who receive Social Security benefits are waiting for the official word on the new raise for 2025. According to the Social Security Administration, the new raise check will be sent out in January, which is when Social Security payments are supposed to happen in 2025.
But before we know for sure how much the payments are, the Bureau of Labor Statistics needs to make the official cost of living adjustment (COLA) public next month.
Senior Citizens League (TSCL) estimates say the COLA raise could be between 2.73 and 3.2%, but we don’t know for sure yet because they haven’t made their final prediction.
Find out about the new certified payment dates for next year and the estimated payment amounts for everyone eligible for Social Security payments if you are one of the recipients.
First Increased Check from Social Security in January 2025
The federal office is responsible for making five sets of payments every month. People who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) get their first two payments on the first and third days of each month. After that, SSA gives RSDI recipients three more rounds of benefits on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month, based on their date of birth.
According to the Social Security payment schedule, SSI recipients will not receive their benefits on January 1 because it is a government holiday. Instead, they will receive them on Tuesday, December 31. However, because February 1st is a weekend, the Social Security Administration will move the check to Friday, January 31st.
Social Security programs 2025 | Monthly benefits (2025) | Criteria to deliver monthly benefits |
SSI benefits | No payments | Recipients will receive their benefits on December 31st because January 1st falls on a weekend. |
RSDI benefits (before May 1997) | January 3rd (Friday) | Only those who filed for Social Security before this date are eligible to receive payments. |
RSDI benefits (after May 1997) | January 8th (Wednesday)January 12th (Wednesday)January 22nd (Wednesday) | Day of birth: 1st–10th.Day of birth: 11th–20th.Day of birth: 21st–31st. |
SSI recipients will receive a payment early in February, even though they won’t receive their monthly benefits in January.
Besides this small change to the regular schedule, people who applied for benefits before May 1997 will still get their normal payments on the third of every month. This includes retirees, survivors, and disabled people. People who applied for Social Security after that date will get their payments at different times depending on when they were born.
How Much Money Will the Social Security Administration Pay to All Its Beneficiaries in 2025?
A person’s Social Security payments are based on a number of factors, such as their age, length of employment, contributions made while working, and the type of disability they have, especially if they are trying to apply for SSDI.
After a person is approved for the program, the SSA will determine the monthly payment based on their specific situation. The benefit’s value will change every year, though, because the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) goes up every year. This helps recipients keep up with inflation.
Since the official COLA raise will not occur until October, we’d like to let you know how much your Social Security payments will increase based on a 2.73 percent increase in monthly benefits.
But please remember that this is just a rough guess of how much your Social Security check will go up in the future. The actual number could be different, which means that payment amounts could also be different.
