In a highly anticipated Section 2 Class B basketball playoff clash, the 13th-seed Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons (NDBG) pulled off a stunning upset against the fourth-seed Watervliet.

The intensity of Class B basketball was on full display as both teams, each boasting formidable records, battled it out on the court. Esiasyn Starr, a standout player for NDBG, played a pivotal role in securing a 53-48 win, propelling his team to the next round of the playoffs.

Watervliet’s Daheem Wilson achieved a significant milestone early in the third quarter by reaching his 1,000th career point. This accomplishment injected newfound energy into the Cannoneers, leading to a comeback that saw them narrowing the gap and pulling within one point. However, NDBG, led by the resilient Esiasyn Starr, countered effectively, finishing the third quarter with a 40-32 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Watervliet staged a remarkable comeback by intensifying their defensive efforts. This defensive pressure resulted in multiple turnovers and fueled a crucial 9-1 run, providing Watervliet with a 47-43 lead with just 1:30 left on the clock—an impressive turnaround and their first lead since the opening moments of the game.

Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons responded to Watervliet’s comeback with admirable resilience. Esiasyn Starr showcased his skill and composure, tying the game at 47-47 and adding two more crucial points in the final 30 seconds. The Golden Knights regained the lead, and with successful free throws, they secured a 53-48 victory, marking a memorable upset.
