Teen Attacks Classmate and Staff with Knife, Police Say
In a startling incident at Troy Community School on 5th Avenue in Rensselaer County, a 16-year-old student and an adult staff member were injured during a reported stabbing attack. The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on February 28, prompting an immediate response from emergency crews and law enforcement.
Troy Police disclosed that a dispute between the juvenile victim and another male student escalated into a physical altercation inside the school premises. During the fight, the suspect produced a pocket knife, injuring the 16-year-old victim.
The school’s security team, including the injured staff member, intervened to break up the confrontation. Unfortunately, in the process, the security staffer was also injured by the knife-wielding teen.
Both the 16-year-old victim and the injured school employee were swiftly transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, authorities expect both individuals to make a full recovery. The 15-year-old suspect, who sustained a minor injury to his hand, was promptly arrested at the school. He is anticipated to face charges in Rensselaer County Family Court.
Following the incident, a hold-in-place order was issued for the campus, ensuring the safety of students and staff. Approximately an hour after the police were called, students were released early to their families. In response to the heightened security concerns, the district announced an increased police presence on campus as a precautionary measure.
The school district expressed gratitude for the immediate response of the Troy Police Department and emphasized the strength of their partnership in addressing the situation. On Twitter, the district stated, “We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Troy Police Department and thank them for their immediate response this morning to the Troy Community School.”

Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello commended the police department for its quick action and coordination with the district in apprehending the suspect. Mantello underscored the top priority of ensuring the safety of youth and schools, asserting that collaborative efforts will persist to keep schools and the community secure.
