Los Angeles Man Arrested for Attempting to Burn RV With Family Inside: Bodycam Footage Released

LOS ANGELES- The Los Angeles Police Department released bodycam footage of a man attempting to set fire to an RV containing his wife and two children.

Officers responded to a report of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon Domestic Violence Restraining Order (RO) violation on July 4, 2024, at about 12:45 a.m., near 51st Street and Central Ave. in South Los Angeles.

The woman, who was married to the culprit, 34-year-old Carlos Rangel, told police that he threatened to burn her RV, which she and her two children were in.

When authorities arrived, they discovered Rangel standing at the back of the RV. He quickly walked away from the RV and went for his front waistband.

Officers can be heard shouting at Rangel to show his hands several times in the footage. He resists, saying “Release my family” several times.

For several minutes, authorities told him to raise his hands and surrender, but he refused repeatedly. On camera, he can be heard saying, “You guys aren’t here to help me.” If we fight, at least one of us will die tonight. Tonight, we all die. If I die, we will all die.”

An officer informed Rangel that if he refused to comply, a 40mm Less-Lethal-Launcher (LLL) would be utilized. Rangel continued to reach for his waistband, resulting in two officers firing three rounds from their 40mm L at him.

Rangel was hit by shots and taken into prison without additional incident.

The police agency stated that the device in his waistband was later discovered to be a cordless drill.

Rangel was brought to a local hospital and admitted with a fractured index finger caused by the 40mm deployment. No other injuries were reported.

Rangel was arrested for attempted murder.
