In a thrilling quarterfinal clash between Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) and Shenendehowa, Matt Sgambati emerged as the hero, not just for his scoring abilities but also for his defensive brilliance.

The game ended in a heart-stopping 52-50 victory for the Brothers, with Sgambati’s crucial steal and subsequent game-winning lay-up in the closing moments securing their spot in the final four of the Class AAA sectional tournament.

Despite his reputation as a gifted scorer, Sgambati’s defensive contribution stole the spotlight. In a tied game at 50, he executed a pivotal steal from one of Shenendehowa’s top guards, setting the stage for the decisive play. This showcased Sgambati’s versatility and highlighted his instrumental role in securing the victory for CBA.

Head coach Dave Dremel praised Sgambati’s consistent defensive efforts throughout the season. As a senior guard, Sgambati led the team in steals, demonstrating a combination of hustle, quickness, and strategic anticipation. In a remarkable sequence, JT Vogel, Amare Coffil, and Sgambati knocked down consecutive three-pointers, erasing Shenendehowa’s lead and tying the score at 46. The game witnessed 11 lead changes in the first three quarters, with Shenendehowa holding a slim 39-37 lead entering the fourth. Although Shen’s 7-0 run initially gave them a comfortable lead at 46-37, CBA’s resilience, fueled by consecutive threes, kept the contest fiercely competitive. Coach Dremel expressed satisfaction with the team’s battling spirit and their ability to catch fire when the stakes were high.
