Honoring Halo: A Heartfelt Vigil and Balloon Release
In a poignant display of love and grief, the family of Halo Branton, an 11-month-old girl tragically lost, gathered at Henry Hudson Riverfront Park for a vigil to honor her memory. The park, usually a place of joy, became the backdrop for somber reflection as family members embraced one another, grappling with the weight of their loss.
Heart-shaped balloons in shades of pink, purple, and red filled the sky as they were released at the boat launch, each carrying a message of love for little Halo, a poignant symbol of the affection that surrounded her during her short life.
The series of events leading to this gathering began when Halo’s mother, Persia Nelson, was found disoriented on the General Electric campus. Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford described Nelson as unaware of her whereabouts, setting off a chain of events that led to tragedy.
Authorities worked tirelessly to locate Halo, shifting their efforts from a missing person search to a missing child case. Despite extensive efforts involving canine units, drones, and personnel on foot, Halo was found in a utility tunnel structure on the G.E. campus. Despite swift medical attention, she could not be revived, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
In the aftermath of Halo’s death, attention turned to her mother, Persia Nelson. Initially charged with second-degree manslaughter, the charges were upgraded to second-degree murder after an autopsy revealed Halo had succumbed to hypothermia.
Nelson remains incarcerated in the Schenectady County Jail on a $500,000 cash bail as the community seeks answers and accountability. The memory of Halo lives on in the hearts of those who knew her, with the vigil and balloon release serving as a testament to her impact.
