NORFOLK, Va. — The number of drug overdose deaths in Virginia has fallen by 23% over the past year, a significant improvement announced by Attorney General Jason Miyares during an event in Richmond on Tuesday morning.
Officials credit this achievement to the availability of life-saving treatment options like Narcan, which can effectively stop an overdose. Narcan, widely accessible across Virginia, has played a crucial role in reducing fatalities.
State leaders also pointed out the success of public awareness campaigns, especially the impactful “One Pill Can Kill” initiative.
These efforts have highlighted the dangers of counterfeit pills and helped educate the public on the importance of prevention.
“Never did I dream that I would use the word optimistic and Fentanyl in the same sentence,” First Lady Suzanne Youngkin remarked.
“But this morning, I stand here hugely optimistic about the work that the Commonwealth of Virginia is doing collectively.”
Despite this progress, overdose deaths have left a devastating impact on the state. Between 2020 and 2023, over 9,000 lives were lost to drug overdoses, according to Miyares.
Virginia’s progress in combating the crisis has not gone unnoticed. The 23% drop in overdose deaths is the third-largest decrease in the United States this year, giving state leaders hope that their strategy is making a real difference.
Governor Glenn Youngkin emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts. “Our work doesn’t stop today,” he said. “It means it’s time to re-double our efforts because what we have demonstrated is that what we are doing works. We just need to do even more.”
